most likely so if by a slim chance soldiers were listening they wouldnt get in trouble or so Ellen wouldnt get upset about leaving her parents to go to see Annemaries Uncle Henrick in a diffrent city. from then on until the war ended they had to keep Ellen hidden so the slodiers wouldnt take her away and they will probably have a couple of close calls with the soldiers and them finding Ellen.
It looks like we understand why the code words were used.
It also seems like everyone thinks Ellen is going into hiding - do you think there is any way for Ellen to excape? Do you think people escaped back then?
1. I think that they were speaking in code because they didnt want the kids to get upset about Ellen leaving.
