End of the semester finals

As we near the end of the first semester of school, kids will be preparing for their mid year finals. These tests will occur in each subject (including many related arts classes) and will be an exam covering the material they have learned thus far this school year. The tests will happen the last two days before the Holiday Break. More information and a class schedule will be sent home next week!

Class Switches!

Good Evening!

We would like to let you know that the Blue Jays' teachers have worked to re-arrange the classes to better accommodate for our individual learners! Since our students travel together for the majority of the day and only have 2 core content teachers, we wanted to give some students a fresh perspective and have changed approximately 20 student's homerooms.

We are trying these new arrangements for the two weeks before the break as we begin to prepare for midterms. We truly believe that all of these schedule changes are in each child's best interest and apologize in advance for not notifying you sooner. If you have questions or concerns, please feel free to ask!

**Both classes are still following the Montessori methodology and will be taught in the same manner, they just have different student groups in them!

Thanks!

What are we doing in language arts?

During Language Ats for the past week, we have been watching clips from Toy Story. We have been working on predicting what a change is in a story or movie. We are focusing on how Woody's world changed when Buzz Light Year moved into Andy's room. Buzz Light Year is taking over woody's life, he is sleeping with andy and is now the leader of all the toys! Woody is going through a BIG change in his life! I think my classmates and I can really relate to the changes that are occuring in Woody's life.

what's going on today?

Today at Westport Middle, the Warhawks have a basketball game against Meyzeek Middle.the dance tem will be here at Westport suporting us and performing. Our cheerleading team will also be here to cheer us on!This is a BIG  game for the Warhawks so come and suport us and wish us good luck!

Money, money, money!! :)

We received our first check in the mail from our Kroger fundraiser. It was for $206.19. Keep using those Kroger gift cards!

If you are interested in participating in this fundraiser, please send your child to school with a check or $5 cash. The gift cards come pre-loaded for $5. Simply take the card to any Kroger customer service counter or checkout and choose an amount to load onto the card and then use the card to pay for your groceries. This fundraiser doesn't cost you a penny, only a few extra seconds in the grocery store. If you haven't already started, please support our Blue Jays!

Remember - for every $5,000 that is loaded onto our Kroger gift cards we receive a check for 4% of the amount. Once we "reload" for another $5,000 we will receive another check. Just think - if each Blue Jay family spent $100 at Kroger a month, we would receive a check for $200 every month!! It's so simple! :)

social studies project

In social studies we have be rewriting a song into a social studies song about our class notes.Me and my friend Sara rewrote the song "Thriiler." I thought that making the song was really fun. Now I can remember what tunda means and arid. Tundra is very cold and arid is hot.Things can be very fun and educational at the same time.

End of 2nd Grading Period

Friday, November 4th marks the end of the 2nd grading period. Teachers have 4 working days to enter grades and then report cards will be printed and sent home. Expect report cards to come home sometime during the week of November 14th.

ENJOY THE LONG WEEKEND! NO SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS ON MONDAY 11/7 OR TUESDAY 11/8!!

School Supplies

Parents/Guardians

Please check with your child this weekend to see if they are running low on pencils, paper or other school supplies. We are officially 1/3 of the way through the school year and this is a common point for school supplies to need some replenishing. We have a number of students that we have been supplying with pencils and paper for the last several weeks and are running low on our own personal supplies as well!

Also - this weekend is a great time to clean out (and replace if needed) binders and tab dividers. If you start a shoebox at home with old papers, that will help your child stay organized and also prevent any important papers from accidentally being thrown away!

Thank you for a great start to the school year!

Also - If you could, please have students keep white out and other supplies of that nature at home. We have had several white out spills that have ruined some school furniture and created messes for our custodial staff to clean up!

Students (and parents) check out this math website. This site allows you to practice ANY topic in math for ANY grade level. Challenge yourself and try a grade level or two higher than 6th to see how well you can do - OR - try some of the work for grade levels below 6th to make sure that you have mastered it! The first student who comes and tells me about their experience with this website will receive a special treat!! :)

Extra Help

Any students needing extra help or time to make up missing work may stay after on Thursdays until 4:00. At least 1 Blue Jays teacher will be staying after every Thursday to assist students that need some extra support. Students will be required to have a parent note stating that they are allowed to stay after. If needed, students can be escorted to the library at 4:00 for a later parent pickup - notes need to indicate that parents approve of this arrangement. We look forward to seeing some Blue Jays on Thursdays after school!

Gattiland Field Trip

Our next field trip is scheduled for Tuesday, October 25th to Gattiland in Westport Village. We will be walking to Gattiland rain or shine (approximately a 15-20 minute walk), so students need to come dressed for the weather! At Gatti's we will complete a lesson about area and perimeter involving bumper cars and then have pizza and spend time in the game room. Unfortunately, we cannot provide students with money for the game room, but students are allowed to bring their own money from home. Students will be encouraged to help more around the house to try to earn a few extra dollars for the field trip.

IMPORTANT: Students that are missing work or having behavior issues at school will not be permitted to attend this field trip. Blue Jays - remember that ALL work is important and needs to be turned in each grading period and your behavior says a lot about your character and often determines how others treat/view you. Let's do our best these next several weeks so that ALL BLUE JAYS earn the field trip to Gattiland.

Every group made their own stone and decorated them using marbles and broken plates. some people made their own stones, too. We had lots of fun! The steppingstones will be ready and dry by Friday. I can't wait to see how they come. out. they will be in our Peace Garden when they are finished.

Social Studies Research

On Thursday and Friday, students will be going to the library to start their historical figures research assignment. Each student will choose a person in history and research where and when that person lived and learn about why their historical figure is important. We will do the majority of the research and rough draft writing at school, and students will be creating their final drafts for homework. Students will be required to submit a list of resources and are asked to only use valid internet resources (no wikipedia, etc.). Note taking for research will be done in student's social studies notebooks. It is extremely important that they have their notebooks every day in class so that they can work on their project as they finish their weekly assignments.

These assignments will be due Thursday, September 29th. Now that I have a better idea of my students' abilities - this date will be set in stone (other dates have been flexible as I have been getting to know students and learning what they are capable of). Please e-mail me with any questions!

Milk Weed Bugs

This week, we built habitats for our Milk Weed Bugs. All the habitats come out amazing! Some of the eggs that the bugs layed are now hatching. Every table group made it's own habitat with water, sticks, cotton, and sunflower seeds for food. Each groups habitat started out with two bugs each. We will also be observing the bugs with a magnifying glass. Hopefully all the bugs will love their new habitat!

Dance Tryouts

Yesterday we had dance tryouts in the small gym. Many of the Montessori kids made the team including Zipporah, Desha, Savi, and Johnasia. Ms. Houston is the dance coach. The first practice will be next Wednesday. I'm  sure the dance team will be great this year!! Wish them luck!!!

The Blue Jays had a great field trip today! We enjoyed hiking, learning about local plants and animals, and participating in team building activities and games.

Great first week!

We finished our first week! Even though it was a short week, the students worked extra hard to accomplish all that we put in front of them. We worked on organizing our binders, setting up the composition books, and reviewing school policies and procedures. Next week, we will talk more specifically about the core content curriculum and the Montessori requirements. We will also introduce the student work plans and any upcoming projects.

Students will visit the library at school on Monday, so please encourage them to find a good book!

Have a wonderful weekend!
